MonroePost Homestead Essential Oils
This feels kinda awkward. I’m not usually one to go all in cray cray over stuff. Ok, well…unless it’s sourdough starter or a Vitamix…or butter. Okay, so take that back…I do go crazy. A wee bit. The latest homestead craze? Let me introduce to you to Essential Oils. No you do not fry French fries in these oils. Although you can cook with them…but more on that later. I bought some essential oils back in the day…like 6 years ago. I’ve been kinda riding the train on them ever since. I originally thought they were just used for scenting things…I don’t even remember what I bought them for originally since I bought them in my “BC” (before crunchy) days. I was eating hotdogs and boxed macaroni and cheese back then. So, who knows why I bought a bottle of Eucalyptus (which smells like cat pee now) and Spearmint oil. Quality does matter in this product, and I don’t think I got that back then. Anyways, I digressed…Needless to say, I have been dabbling in these oils for years but only recently have I figured out the actual beneficial uses for them (besides making you smell good). I was introduced to Young Living oils a while back as well but it took me a LONG time to finally make the jump to get on board with these oils. Like whoa, I am so glad I did! Okay so that’s my goofy story, now I’ll get to the meat. Err, the oils…
What Are Essential Oils?
Glad you asked! Before I ramble on please note I’m not a scientist or a doctor or a therapist so don’t quote me in your thesis or anything. As much as I love researching, I am limited on my time as I have three attention monkeys hanging off of me at any given moment. So…that being said, I am just relaying the information to the best of my ability to you! Essential oils are found in many many plants. The actual oil is extracted from different parts depending on the plant. Sometimes its from the flower, the fruit, the bark, the leafs, etc. Ever squeezed a lemon rind and gotten squirted in the face with some super potent citrus flavor? That is essential oil! In other cases, this “oil” is not so apparent. Take roses, one does not readily notice any oily parts about a rose. However, rose petals do have an essential oil in them…but it takes A LOT of rose petals to get a little oil. So…naturally, that’s one of the most expensive oils. Back to the point…Essential oils are not technically “oils” however, they share similar properties in that they are hydrophobic (don’t mix well with water). They are full of wonderful volatile (vaporizes quickly) aromatic compounds that give the plant its distinct smell. They are quickly absorbed into the skin or can be diffused into the air for therapeutic purposes…or just to make your house smell delish.
Essential oils can be extracted in a couple of different ways. Steam distillation is the most common for most oils. Cold-pressing is also another method, usually for citrus oils and other plant parts that have a high oily composition. Finally, there is the use of solvents, however, those typically render non-therapeutic oils and would not be safe to use in any application I suggest on this site. There are a few that can only be extracted in that manner. They are more used for cosmetic perfumes and fragrances. Thats the extent of my scientific knowledge. I love to research, as mentioned before, but I would also like to encourage you to do your own as well.
How to Use Essential Oils
There are three ways of using these oils depending on what you are trying to achieve. Essential oils have been used for centuries for therapeutic reasons, to help the body heal from different ailments. Oils can be diffused into the air through the use of a diffuser. This disperses the oils into the air in very small particles so that your body can quickly absorb them and use them. You may also apply the oils topically right onto the skin with (and in some cases without) the use of a carrier oil (like coconut or olive oil). Finally, with therapeutic grade, high quality oils, you can use some of them internally to target specific needs in your body. You can also use them to flavor foods. Personally, for our family we choose to use the first two methods most often. I occasionally add a drop of oil or two to a recipe in which it will dispersed throughout the food. If you have questions about these please don’t hesitate to ask and I can help you navigate…this is a lot of information to absorb all at once!!
Essential oils work in different ways, the hundreds of compounds found in each different oil can serve the body in many ways. One of the most powerful ways oils work is is through our sense of smell, which directly affects the limbic system. Your limbic system supports a lot of functions in your body. Scent can triggers the emotional centers in your brain. In addition the limbic system is responsible for the emotion-memory connections. Okay, before you think I’m saying some whack-ish stuff let’s take an example. You walk into someone’s home (probably Grandma’s) and are welcomed by the smell of apple pie…you immediately “feel” something right? The smell alone of something can trigger an emotion and probably a fond memory. Isn’t that incredible?
Now imagine you could harness that scent of apple pie into a little bottle so that anytime you wanted to have a happy memory you could open the bottle and enjoy it over and over. I’m sorry to say, there is no apple pie essential oil. Yet. Lol. Okay, so this is scientific hokey pokeyish sounding. Heres my two cents: God fashioned us in such an incredible way that our bodies are able to do this. The fact that God created us with the ability to have emotional memories is just really mind blowing. I mean think about it…babies KNOW the scent of their mothers. It brings them calm, peace, and joy. It helps them bond.
In the Bible, the story of Jacob and Esau illustrates this perfectly. Their father Isaac wants to bless Esau with the family blessing, as Esau was the first born. However, Jacob tricks his father (who is blind) into blessing him instead by dressing up and smelling like Esau. Genesis 27:27 says this: “So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said, “Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed.”” Jacob set out to smell like Esau so his father would be fooled.
Our sense of smell is a powerful tool. Still hanging with me? I know this is a lot to take in. Isn’t it wonderful how God created created all things to work together. Our intricate bodies to participate with his creation of nature. Indeed. There are yet still other ways that these oils can work in our bodies. Because of their ability to rapidly absorb into skin, they quickly make their way into the bloodstream where they can be used by the body to help with hormonal issues, sleep issues, minor ailments, de-stressing, and the list goes on and on.
Are Essential Oil’s Safe?
By now you might be wondering…But are these oils SAFE? Well, that’s a complicated answer. These oils are POWERFUL. As with anything in creation and even man-made, we must honor and maintain respect for these powerful creations. The whole saying “Just because something is natural doesn’t make it safe.” There’s lots of natural things that would probably not be a good idea to rub all over your body. Thankfully, when you use oils from a reputable company, such as Young Living, you can be assured that they are not going to bottle something that is hazardous to your health if you respect the recommendations for usage. These oils are very very carefully grown, tested, and bottled to ensure that there is nothing in them that would adulterate the oil’s ability to help our bodies. To read more about their quality standards click their Seed to Seal agreement. That being said, there are some considerations for using these oils while pregnant, on other prescription medicines, etc. But again, I am not a doctor, so please do your own research in this area and make decisions based on your findings. I am merely here as a guide!!
Be thankful that we are given these tools to help heal ourselves (in addition to prayer!) in a day and age of uncertainty. I know for one that I have been blessed not having to take all my three children to the doctor and all the medical bills that that brings for simple issues like colds. But again, use common sense…If you break a leg, I don’t think there is an oil to fix that. However, bring your apple pie oil to the ER with you so you can at least have something to take your mind off the pain. Lol…

A Final Word
Essential oils are a “hot topic” in the natural world right now. There is a lot of differing opinions. There is a no-tolerance policy on this site for any attacking or condemning words or comments. This is a safe place to talk about how to use these oils with integrity and respect. I hope we can all experience what a blessing it is to have such powerful tools within our reach. I am proud to be a part of this movement.
